Perceptive Software is an American multinational software firm that develops, licenses, deploys and supports enterprise content management (ECM) software technology to organizations of all sizes globally. Headquartered in Shawnee, Kansas, USA, with regional offices in United Kingdom, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Hungary, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Australia and Singapore, the company employs more than 600 workers.

History

The company’s predecessor was founded in 1988 as Genesis Software, selling accounts payable programs. It changed its name to Perceptive Vision, switched its focus to document management, imaging and workflow software, and introduced its flagship software product, ImageNow, in 1995. The company’s name became Perceptive Software in 2004. Perceptive Software was acquired by Lexmark International in June 2010 for a cash purchase of $280 million and operates as a stand-alone software business within Lexmark.

Scott Coons, president & CEO of Perceptive Software, joined the company in 1995 and has piloted the company to a substantial and sustained period of growth. Early on, Coons refocused the company’s market strategy, and under his guidance, Perceptive Software has become one of the top 10 global providers of ECM software technology.

Products

The product focus for Perceptive Software is enterprise content management (ECM) software technology. The product line covers the core ECM components of document imaging, document management, e-forms, records and information management (RIM), and workflow.

Perceptive Software developed and patented its LearnMode™ technology, which is a set of nonprogrammatic techniques for integrating ECM technology with virtually any application delivered to a Microsoft Windows desktop or web browser. LearnMode is used as a point-and-click method for integrating ImageNow with business applications without the need for any new code to be written.

The company serves a broad spectrum of industries with its line of business and departmental solutions composed of software technology, industry expertise and best practices along with a comprehensive professional services team. Perceptive Software’s solutions are well known for automating back office processes such as accounting and financials, human resources, contract management, payroll, legal and compliance. The company has established a strong reputation in the higher education sector. Other key industries of emphasis include healthcare, government and financial services.

Culture

In 2010, Perceptive Software employed nearly 600 associates between its U.S. headquarters and international offices. Employees voted it one of the Kansas City Business Journal’s “Best Places to Work” five times, making Perceptive Software one of only three Kansas City companies to receive the award five times.

Contributing to this achievement are its competitive salaries and benefits package, including a flexible time-off policy, employee health and wellness opportunities, monthly chair massages, organized company events, community service projects and state-of-the-art work facilities.

Two examples of the company’s work hard / play hard culture are reflected in the construction of the Shawnee-based global headquarters. This includes the slide between second and first floors and a certified, regulation dodgeball court. The company hosts an annual charity dodgeball tournament—Dodge for a Cause—that benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and draws competitors from across the area.

Partnerships

Perceptive Software has long-standing partnerships with a number of software and hardware providers, including SAP, Oracle Corporation, Microsoft Corporation, Lawson Software, Datatel, Xerox Corporation, Canon and Fujitsu, to name just a few. These alliances have helped Perceptive Software grow at a faster rate than the enterprise content management category itself, and the company is one of the ten largest ECM providers in the world.

Awards

Perceptive Software has been recognized for its success and growth through a number of programs, including being named a Computerworld Honors Laureate, and president and CEO Scott Coons receiving the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.

Community Engagement

Known within the company as the “Community Works” program, Perceptive Software supports a mix of causes, philanthropies and programs in which its employees are invested. Most notable is Dodge for a Cause, an annual charity dodgeball tournament hosted at the company’s NADA-approved dodgeball court. The tournament brings together participants from across the area and generates funds for the Kansas City chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). The tournament has generated nearly $90,000 for diabetes research and programs.

Educating Excellence, a program that Perceptive Software developed in partnership with the University of Kansas School of Engineering recognizes outstanding Kansas and Kansas City area high school science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) teachers.

Employees of Perceptive Software contribute to many organizations with financial donations, in-kind support and time off for volunteer projects. These include the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Cells for Cells, Harvesters, Kansas City Corporate Challenge, Light the Night, Old Shawnee Days, Rebuilding Together Shawnee, Run for Mercy and Treads and Threads.
